The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra was the brainchild of Chalium Poppy. His vision to develop an ensemble dedicated to performing chamber music repertoire in Nanaimo was realized with the input, support, and co-operation of many talented local musicians. One of the key principles guiding the creation of the NCO was that of mentoring. This unique ensemble has incorporated a mix of experienced professionals, talented pre-professional young music students, and dedicated amateurs. Karl Rainer, the music director of the group, hails from Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, where he was active as violinist, concertmaster, and musical director for over 20 years.
